In Vitro Test Systems

Research is focused on identifying and modeling the behavior of signaling pathways inside the cell as well as the interaction of living cells with abiotic surfaces. A few systems under study are ion channels in neuronal cells and the transduction of electrical signals from the neuronal cells onto metal electrode arrays for subsequent recording on a computer. Our approach is to quantify the relationship (possibly nonlinear) between the experimentally obtained input output data sets, the goal is to keep this quantification succinct so that many such objects can then be put together to form a larger system (with predictive capabilities) that does not become unwieldy and computationally untenable. A further goal is to utilize optimization approaches and systems theory to predict the existence of certain signaling mechanisms or dynamical structures inside these cells.
