Gold Particle Research Featured on TV

Photo

This week, both Fox 35 News Orlando and Inside Science TV featured the work of NSTC Assistant Professor Jayan Thomas.

In collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University, Thomas and his research group have developed atomically engineered ultra-small particles with interesting optical limiting properties. These particles are called gold nanoclusters.

Lasers are powerful sources of energy and can pose a threat to people working with laser systems. Laser irradiation can damage eyes or other body parts. The potential applications of Thomas's research could be useful in a variety of industries, including military personnel and pilots who can be distracted or temporarily blinded by laser pointers. The gold nanoclusters could be used to develop protective eyewear.

The results were published in a recent issue of Nano Letters. View the news segments below or visit Inside Science and MyFoxOrlando.
